Shooting From the Hip

I haven’t had much of a chance to go out shooting lately and to be perfectly honest I’m feeling a bit rusty.

Need to brush up on my distances by eye πŸ™‚

Christchurch Earthquake

I finally got a chance to pass through Christchurch earlier in the year for the first time since the major earthquake of 2011.

I have to say it was a bit strange walking through the central city where only around 1 in 5 buildings are still standing even after 5 years.

I remember going to concerts in Christchurch, not getting accommodation for the night, and just wandering around until the bus left back to Dunedin in the morning…

The Train That Wanted To Fly

Last week as I was dropping my wife off at the train stationΒ I got a call from a friend telling me to not let her get on the train. She was just getting out of the car and saying goodbye to the kids. When I had a decent look the train was surrounded by tape and there were about four fire engines at the end of the platform.

Apparently the trains brakes malfunctioned and the train went through the end of the line and ended up propped up on a rock and lump of concrete up against a pole.

Luckily no-one was seriously hurt.

The joys of always having a camera with you πŸ™‚

Napier, Art Deco Capital Of New Zealand

Just spent the last weekend in Napier for a cousins wedding. I shot a number of films while I was there and due to bad remembering developed one of the ones I shot round town while I was supposed to be developing the ones I took at the wedding πŸ™‚

Most of Napier was levelled in an earthquake in 1931 which killed 256 people but was mostly rebuilt in the Art Deco style that was popular at the time.

GCSB Bill Protest Wellington Part 3… The Final

Last post from the GCSB protest on last weekend in Wellington.

These ones were taken on a Nikon FG20 which I bought from an Op Shop for $35. The film is also 8 years expired which gives it a bit of flaring and blocking out of the blacks.

I quite liked the effect as its not your usual super sharp, super well exposed documentary photos we are use to seeing.

GCSB Bill Protest Wellington

Well it looks like its been a while since I have posted anything…

I went to the GCSB Protest in Wellington last Saturday along with my trusty Rolleiflex πŸ™‚ Only just started scanning the shots today and so far this one stands out…

In hindsight it is a bit weird that I went to a protest about being watched and listened in on… Street photographer and all πŸ™‚

Still haven’t been getting out street shooting lately but taking the occasional shot when I do get into town… In the process of setting up a studio in the double garage under the house so will be interesting to see what come of it all. Hopefully going to bust out the 4×5 for some large format goodness πŸ™‚

Ever wondered what to do when you are out walking your chair and you have to quickly duck in somewhere? Apparently the best place to leave it is your friendly neighbourhood bike park πŸ™‚

Hobbit World Premiere (Slightly Delayed)

This shows about how far behind the times I am at the moment with film developing and scanning…

These are from the World Premier of The Hobbit movie which happened here in Wellington. I didnt get to actually go when anyone was on the red carpet but went earlier in the day to catch the people who had staked their spots early.
