A Year Of Photography With A Rolleiflex

Well 2011 is finally over, its been a pretty good year, Ive had the usual ups and downs but have managed to take quite a few images.

Here are some highlights from Rollei and I in 2011… Enjoy 🙂

We walked the streets when no one else was around…

…and went to some events.

We traveled to Auckland…

…and did some assisting.

Sometimes we walked for hours and only took a single shot…

… and sometimes we shot a whole roll of film in under 30 minutes.

We went shooting in the rain…

…and when it was too dark to see the numbers on the dials.

Sometimes we were a little too slow…

…but sometimes our timing was bang on.

We self published a book on street photography…

…and even sold a few copies…You can see it  HERE

We took photos of people taking photos, but never photos of people taking photos of people taking photos.

We finally broke through the mental barrier of going up to people in the street and asking to take their photo, not one person said no.

Sometimes we went to different places to shoot…

…and sometimes things happened right outside our door.

We went urban exploring with friends…

…and found some pretty cool places…

…which led to some more assisting.

Sometimes we waited to get the shot…

…but mostly we just wandered around aimlessly and watched for stuff to happen…

…and happen it did…

…sometimes it was pretty random…

…sometimes it was really random…

…but it was all good…

Yup… all in all its been a pretty good year.

Bring on 2012!

Occupy Wellington Board

For the new year I have been trying different styles of street photography. Usually I use the aimless wandering style of street photography which means that you don’t really stop moving and capture whatever happens in front of you, this method is great for when I have Samantha in the backpack because she gets bored if I stand still too long. Over Christmas I have had a few opportunities to go out by myself and have been doing a bit of camping in one spot and waiting for something to happen… These shots were basically done by standing in the middle of the footpath without moving for about 5 minutes 🙂

These are of the Occupy Wellington board which stated that the city council was evicting them from where they are located on the 4th on January… As far as I know they are still there

Zoo Half Frame

I love how seamless this shot is even though the two girls are in it twice… Look at it big 🙂

Sleeper In The Sun

I loved all the lines in this one at the back of Te Papa (national museum).

Pomare Revisited

Went out looking for abandoned buildings yesterday afternoon and ended up driving back past Pomare… It has changed quite a lot since I was there a couple of weeks ago. Houses that still had people in them are now nothing but empty shells and new buildings have fences around them as they are due for demolition. The fences around some of the buildings had been pushed down and there were people removing bathroom fixtures (not sure if they were supposed to be there or not since it was a public holiday).

The whole place has an aerie feel especially once you look closer at the things that have been left behind.

Abandoned Service Station

I found this abandoned service station in Upper Hutt, Wellington a couple of weeks ago…

Happy New Year

Post no bills but apparently you can leave your ironing board there… Happy New Year 🙂

Zoo Shooters

At the Wellington Zoo yesterday and couldn’t help slipping back into street shooting mode 🙂

Sleeper And Bag With Teeth

Sometimes when you go to shoot one thing something else comes along… The guy with the bag sat on the seat just as I was taking the shot of the sleeper 🙂

Boxing Day Beach

Here are a few shots from Boxing Day… The weather here has been super nice with 28 degree days and no wind, which is rare for Wellington…

There has also been large numbers of Jellyfish floating around the harbor and consequently washing up on the beach. Luckily they are the non fatal kind 🙂

Merry Christmas

Even Mrs Chippy was looking christmasy yesterday in the perfect 28 degree heat.

Mrs Chippy was the ships cat on the Endurance which was caught in the ice on Antarctica and later crushed. Harry McNish, whose grave  the cat is on,who  was the ships carpenter (or chippy) adopted the cat who became known as Mrs Chippy, a name that stuck even after it was discovered the Mrs Chippy was a boy.

Tragically when the ship was destroyed the cat was shot since only essential supplies could be taken…

Harry McNish was one of the small crew selected to go to try and find help to rescue the crew… Frank Worsley wrote a book called Shackleton Boat Journey which described the adventure.

I have a bit of family link to this as currently one of my uncles is in Antarctica restoring the historic sites used by people like Shackleton.
