Rugby Sevens, A Street Shooting Guide
WARNING This is an attempt at humor that has essentially failed but I thought I would put it up anyway… From now on I will just stick to photography!
So the Rugby Sevens starts tomorrow and even as I write this there is a parade with all the teams passing through town in all their colour and splendor.
I am currently at home developing film while my youngest has her lunch sleep 🙂 so I thought I would write up a quick informational to help would be street photographers to navigate the slippery slope that is Wellington on Rugby Sevens weekend.
Disclaimer: If you want something serious maybe stop reading now… All views are mine alone and while this post may contain some information of use in no way were any animals harmed in the making.
Rugby Sevens… Its the one weekend where you are more likely to be beaten up for not taking someones photo that the other way round. The one weekend of the year where it is OK for rugby guys to walk around wearing shot skirts and dresses outside and for girls to wear clothing several sizes too small for them.
Im a cheap ass and never actually buy a ticket to the actual games (although most of the teams train on the field across from where I live so I kind of get a free preview).
What do you need? Not necessarily in order…
Camera (very important unless you have one built in somehow)
Wingman (good idea especially if you are going out at night cause they can photograph you being assaulted and you can both laugh about it the next day…Joking)
Film or a memory card (cause sometimes a camera just isn’t enough)
Clothes (cause being naked in public just gets you arrested)
Lots of energy drinks (because it helps your shot count even if they are a bit more blurry at a 1/500th)
The first year I shot I decided to go up onto the concourse outside the stadium and get shots of people coming in… This was a good confidence boost because people really wanted to have their photo taken… If you are shy just attach yourself to one of the press photographers and when they get someone to stop take one over their shoulder… I learned this the hard way due to the fact that this is exactly what one of the press photographers did to me…

Colourful but pretty boring on the street photography front…
I tend to hang around town and get the people on their way to of from the grounds… It makes for interesting interactions… You have to watch out though cause they move pretty fast, blink and you might miss something (I recommend matchsticks to prop open your eyes so you don’t miss anything)
This to can degrade into posing for the camera which is to be avoided at all costs…
The best shots seem to happen after the games have finished and people go out to party… but again you should avoid these shots where you can since using a flash really makes it hard to be low profile in you shooting.
Again not really street photography but just a lot of fun 🙂

Dresden Dolls Wellington Opera House 2012 With A Rolleiflex
So if you have been following this blog or Twitter you will know that I got to go to the Dresden Dolls show in Wellington after winning a ticket from Amanda Palmer off of Twitter (and I never win anything!). I got my entry in slightly late but mentioned that I had a 1957 Rolleiflex that wanted to meet her, she ended up giving me a ticket but saying that I owed her a photo… Sweet!
This post is pretty much for Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione to say thanks for a Super Wicked Show! (hopefully they get to see it)
All the shots are taken with said Rolleiflex, who I have to say outdid itself especially the ones of the show at 3200 ISO… Film is not dead! 🙂
At one point Amanda had to go for a piss so this guy came up from the audience to play… He did a pretty good job too 🙂

A Couple Of Long Exposures
I have been away camping with the family for the last couple of days (hence no new photos). Did a bit of playing with long exposure shots and the D90 to see how it would handle… The first one is a 20 minute exposure which has been a bit over tweaked in Photoshop (sorry not quite back in the real world yet) and the second one is a 30 second exposure.
The files look good but I have to say that the camera processing time was crazy! On the first shot the exposure was 20 minutes and it nearly took that long to process the image after the initial exposure so 40 minutes all up. I am hoping I just left a setting on which would increase the processing time so will have to look and see what other people have said…

Movember Portrait Project
So Movember has ended and what better way to finish it (postponed due to camera dying) than to do a series of impersonations of famous moustaches 🙂

Death Of A Friend… D70s You Will Be Missed
Last week my trusty Nikon D70s decided that after 8 years of being thrashed that enough was enough.
This post is a dedication of sorts to all the fun we have had together over the last 8 years…
This is the last shoot it ever took… Finishing up the shoot for Spook The Horses on a rooftop in Wellington… You will be missed 😦

More Expired Film And Camera Testing
The last two shots off the film that expired 19 years ago.
This was also a bit of a test since I have been having trouble with focusing at the closer distances… Theses were taken on a tripod in good light with the camera set to f8… It looks like I might have to do another test on something static, but the camera might have to go and get the mirror re-calibrated.

The Humble Road Cone and 19 Year Old Expired Film
The other day I got given a roll of Kodak Ektachrome 64T which expired in October 1992. It had been kept in a freezer so I thought I would do a short series on the humble road cone which I would then get cross processed… It turned out much better than I thought… Might have to try and find some more.

Fever Hospital
The other week Fergus (Cunningvision) organised to be let into Wellingtons old Fever Hospital/Chest Hospital. There is talk that the SPCA is going to be taking it over and we thought it would be a good opportunity to document it before there were any changes made.
The place is supposed to be haunted and the night after we were there the Strange Occurrences Paranormal Investigation Group spent the night. I have to say that there was an eerie feeling to the place.
I have to say that this is one of the cooler places we have been to photograph and unfortunatley we both had prior arrangements so we couldn’t stay as late as we would have otherwise done.
Re-shoot will be done 🙂
