Canon Photo5 Competition Registration

Just sent off pre-registration for this years Canon EOS Photo5 competition (Click here for last years competition)

After you register they send you a small box with 5 photo briefs in it which you have to shoot. It was pretty fun and I especially enjoyed working out what I was going to shoot.

If you are in NZ or Aus registrations open on the 10th of Sept… Check it out and have a go 🙂

Last year the briefs were:

Hundreds and thousands for a Macro shot

Practically Black

Some paint powder for a “Splat” shot

A pair of cardboard glasses for a portrait

Bokeh masks to create Bokeh effects

Thought I would show last years entry (and yes I know I dont shoot canon but who cares…)

Hundreds and thousands

Splat

Practically Black

I ran out of time to do the other 2 briefs but managed to get some test shots done

Here go a couple of Bokeh test shots…

Fatherhood Friday 21: Amanda Makes me Smile

No pics of kids this week back to that next week 🙂

While I was cleaning up the kitchen this morning I spotted a note between the cleaning products…

On closer inspection this is what it said…

Not sure if it was for me or for those hiding in plain sight that I possibly can’t see… Either way it made me smile so I took these images and then put it back 🙂

More NDX Goodness

As promised here goes some more NDX shots.

This filter gives a colour cast if you havent noticed and I find some of these shots hard on my eyes but they definitely have more of a post apocalyptic feel to them. The other reason I usually convert them is in the upper left hand corner and is more apparent when there is just sky. My Nikon D70s gives me a nice pink cloud effect which is really annoying on really long exposures and is apparently caused by the contacts with the autofocus system heating up, you don’t get it with manual focus lenses (all mine are auto focus so havent tested this out to see if it is true or not)

NIkon D70s, 18-70mm Lens, ISO 200, Cokin NDX Filter. All exposures f8 at around 10 Minutes

New Oakleys

I managed to lose my Sunglasses a number of weeks ago and since they were worth a bit (left over from when I had money and no kids) decided to claim them on insurance.

Yay they finally came… Good old Oakley X-Metal Juliets.

Thought Id better do a pic before they got all scratchafied.

Nikon D70s, 18-70mm Lens, ISO 200. 2 x Electra 500w Compact Studio lights shooting into white reflect umbrellas. f29 @ 1/640th sec (even though its only supposed to sync up to 1/500th)

NDX Filter Shots

All these images were taken with a Cokin NDX filter which reduces light by a massive 13 stops, ie you can’t see anything through it.

They are all around 10 minute exposures in the middle of the day with lots of people around but because of the long exposure they seem mostly deserted.

I converted them to black and white because unfortunately the filter has a colour shift which is near impossible to correct.

I like they way they feel…kinda deserted and slightly disturbing.

Not entirely happy with the result and will go back and do again possibly when it is more overcast so the shadows aren’t as problematic.

Queenstown Stitch Panorama

It was a dark and gloomy day…

Looking out from a car park on Coronet Peak Ski Field onto the Wakatipu Basin with Queenstown in the gap in the right of the picture.

It pretty much was overcast whenever I went out to take pictures and about 6 hours after we flew out they had a snowfall that pretty much closed the whole of Queenstown down for a couple of days.

A Couple of Cats… But not Cute Ones.

Seen at Coronet Peak just out of Queenstown.

I was busy taking a panoramic sequence of the snow makers when three of these beasts came down the hill grooming the snow in formation. unfortunately their lights were so bright it was next to impossible to get them coming down but they stopped where I was and went in for a 30 minute coffee break… Nice!

Piston Bully 600 Snowcat

Piston Bully Winchcat

This one differs from the first due to the fact that it has a large winch on the back which gets attached to a post at the top of very steep runs so the snowcat can still go down and then wince itself back up. Also handy if one of the others gets stuck.

The Mushroom Hunt Continues….

Out hunting for mushrooms again…

Two Shots of Birds

At an old flat there was a Starling who was building a next in the house nest door. Managed to get these shots by hanging out a window and waiting.

I named him/her George… Not really sure why.

Fatherhood Friday 12:

Still inundated with colds… Emily is now on antibiotics and it sounds like we are a house full of smokers… a coughing symphony if you will.

Emily and I are going skiing in a couple of weeks (yes I have already worked out what camera equipment I am going to take) and Grandma and Grandad sent Emily up some mittens and goggles hence the photo. Thank you Grandma and Grandad! We are both looking forward to coming down to see you.

Samantha:  Seems to be the most healthy one here and is getting into as many things as possible while the rest of us are being a bit slow to react.

Both pictures from this morning

Nikon D70s, 50mm f1.8 Lens, ISO 200. f1.8 at 1/200th of a second.
